Asus VG236H While I haven’t tried any of the other 120hz monitors on the market, I’m completely in love with this one. Being a competitive FPS gamer, I was looking for a monitor with the response and smoothness of a CRT. This is certainly it. If you’re used to gaming on a 60hz LCD, you will be amazed at how fluid and clear the picture is at 120hz. However, it is imperative that you use the special dual-link DVI cable that comes in the box and install the appropriate drivers, or the picture won’t look right when you set it to 120hz. Out of laziness I just plugged in my previous monitor’s cable, and the screen looked messed up. Additionally, you may notice input lag or other unwanted effects if you don’t have the right drivers installed, so be sure to take care of all that before critiquing.
The picture on this monitor is beautiful. The colors really pop, especially when running in the “game mode” preset, which adds an additional level of contrast and intensity to the color. The screen is glossy, but I don’t have any issues with glare, even with a window directly behind me.
I didn’t buy this monitor for its 3D capabilities, and I have nothing to compare it to, but the stereoscopic 3D appears to work great when viewing the included demos and playing Bad Company 2.
The monitor has a very sturdy frame, and has both height and tilt adjustments. This is great considering monitors seem to have gotten more and more wobbly over the years.
Overall I would highly recommend this monitor for fast twitch FPS players, or anyone looking for a fluid and highly responsive gaming display. If you’re in the market for a 120hz monitor and are concerned about the issues that seem to be plaguing most of the other options in the marketplace, then this is a no-brainer. I’ve found that most of the negative reviews of this product are a result of not using the included cable or not having the proper drivers installed.
